I knit a scarf twice as long as it should be. Is there a way to bind or sew it into two scarves if I cut it?

I used the huge needles, US 35 – 19mm, so the stitches are large. I was experimenting and I am a beginner knitter. I put like 84 stitches on and knit two skeins of yarn, and ended up with a scarf twice as long as it should be. Is there a way to cut it and bind off so I have two scarves? I thought of sewing the two sides together into one scarf, but it is too bulky.

Of course you can!

Start by collecting up a couple of extra knitting needles. (3 or 4 of them is better. They don’t all need to be the same size, but should be close or slightly smaller than the ones you used for your knitting.)

Go to the row below the one you want to cut and use one of the needles to pick up the right hand side of each stitch. Leave the needle in the scarf.

Turn the scarf upside down and go the row that is now below the one you want to cut, and use the other needle to pick up the right hand side of each stitch. (You may end up with one more or less stitches.)
Leave this needle in the scarf, too.

Snip one thread in the center of the row between the needles. With a darning needle, carefully unravel the ends you snipped all the way out to the edges.

If you’ve done it right, the two scarves will be seperated with a needle in the last row of each, and no live stitches that are not secured by a knitting needle (but the working thread may be on the wrong end of the needle.) If this is not the case, carefully pick up any dropped stitches, even if it means working back another row in order to catch them all.

Now you can bind off across the row ending with the tail. If this bind off is not loose enough (or if you want to repeat a pattern design at the end), you can back up a row or two and do a more traditional stretchy bind off. Repeat the bind off process for the second scarf and You Are done.
