How do I handle the fact that my dad is probably dying without mourning him before he is dead?

I feel awful trying to put him out of my mind when he is so sick and we should be surrounding him. But he might have severe brain damage and isn’t responding to us at all, so it is so hard to go see him or even think about him.

I try to put my mind off of him by whatever- planning for Christmas, thrift store shopping, knitting… But that makes me feel so guilty as he is still alive.

I shouldn’t be mourning yet. But i don’t know what else to do?

It is perfectly natural to mourn the loss of your father as you knew him. Head injuries are extremely difficult to come to terms with, as the persons character and behavior often changes dramatically. Don’t feel guilty about not wanting to see him in the state he is in.
Some people prefer to keep the happy memories of their loved ones, rather than remembering them as sick or dying.
Your dad may not be able to respond to you in his current state, but he may be aware of your presence. Have you tried reading to him, or playing his favorite music? Having a distraction may make you feel a bit more comfortable, and prevent you sitting there staring at him. Continue keeping busy, but don’t try to fool yourself by denying it is happening. Good luck, and I hope everything works out.
